Illuminating history
through art and conservation.

Historic Frame Conservation, Gilding, Fine Art,

and Archaeological/Historical Illustration

Eric Stegmaier

Credentials & Highlights

Eric Stegmaier has worked as an archaeological illustrator since 2002, contributing to excavations across the Near and Middle East as well as the Caribbean. He holds a Master’s degree in Religious Studies from Sacred Heart University, where his research focused on ancient death and burial practices.

His illustration work has been widely published, and his clientele includes Yale University, University of North Carolina, University of Tennessee, SEARCH Inc., and The Archaeological Conservancy.

As Senior Conservation Assistant at the Yale Center for British Art, Eric specializes in the conservation and restoration of historic picture frames dating from the 17th to the early 20th centuries. His work involves structural and surface stabilization, gilding and toning treatments, and the careful recreation of lost ornamentation using traditional materials and techniques. He collaborates closely with curators to ensure each frame’s historical integrity is preserved while maintaining aesthetic harmony with the artwork it supports.

Eric’s approach to both illustration and conservation is grounded in respect for cultural heritage and a commitment to craftsmanship.

Philosophy

“With some objects, I swear I can sense the veil of time being pulled away as I work with them, but the laws of nature keep the experience elusive.”

Each piece I undertake is a conversation with the past. I approach every project — whether it's an illustration, a fine art commission, or a frame treatment — with respect, curiosity, and devotion to historical truth.
